Jazz på Svenska

I'm a bit of a jazz fan. Of all periods really. As long as it's got a melody and mood I'm happy. So it's inevitable that I was going to discover 'Jazz på Svenska'. The 1964 jazz record composed by Jan Johansson for piano and bass and based on Swedish folk tunes. It's the best selling jazz release in Sweden of all time. It's deceptively simple playing but so cool and beautiful that you may find yourself entranced by it. Have a listen to a track off the album.

Jan Johansson is also best known as the composer of "Here Comes Pippi Longstocking" ("Här kommer Pippi Långstrump"), the theme song of the famous 'Pippi Longstocking' swedish tv series.

Sweden has a history of jazz dating back to the 1920's, though the golden age of Swedish jazz is considered to be the 1950's, with Monica Zetterlund, Alice Babs, Arne Domnerus and Lars Gullin amongst the most important jazz artists. But what's considered golden changes in different times and I think his simple, quiet, unpretentious playing is an antidote to our own manic, noisy age.
