Lloyd Cole at Stockholm's Rival Hotel April 2011
I don't know if you remember a song from the 80's called 'Perfect Skin'? It's a melodic, whimsical song with gangling guitars about a guy amazed by the beauty of a girl, sung by a unpretentious singer with a deep soulful, sad voice and was a hit around the world. The singer's name is Lloyd Cole and since that time he's continued to make music and tour where he's popular. He's popular in Sweden and last week was in Stockholm singing 'Perfect Skin' to an audience of much older people at Rival, Benny Andersson's hotel/cafe in Södermalm. It was an absolutely fantastic, moving concert and I had to stifle tears a few times as his songs, stripped back to acoustic basics and his deep voice were so moving. Ah memories.
We were lucky to have front row tickets with about 700 enthusiastic fans filling the theatre. You could bring in your wine or coffee and relax and enjoy. The girl next to me was having a nice old time knocking back her reds and provided a few laughs with Lloyd and his two brilliant guitarists. I hadn't been to the Rival hotel (the band played a few riffs, I think of Mamma Mia, in homage to Benny) only the cafe and we'll be going back for a coffee as it has a great relaxed but stylish vibe with the usual fantastic Swedish lighting design. And Elvis Costello's coming in November too. It's also right next to the gym which we went to before the concert as you do. Lloyd in contrast was heading off into the night with his muso buddies to sample the beers of Stockholm as you do if you've just had a great gig.
